4 Tips to a better virtual learning experience

Living in this past year’s Covid-filled environment has brought many challenges to the surface and opened a whole new world of schooling for many families. Virtual education wasn’t at the forefront of our plans or desires for this year. A lot of us have been thrown into it kicking and screaming, but there’s hope! With a few simple tips, you can make your days more manageable for you and your children, and maybe even avoid some tears.

  1. Plan your study location – While it’s not necessary to have a whole room dedicated to schooling, it is important to have a set area that is quieter and free from distractions. Sometimes classes are live, and when the mute setting is not an option, being in a quiet space will help student and teacher alike to effectively communicate and learn. If possible, make the space fun by bringing in colorful furniture, artwork, or comfy bean bags. Avoid working by a window or doorway, where your child might be more distracted by what is happening on the other side.
  2. Prepare your supplies – Hone that focus during school hours by having the necessary supplies within arm’s reach before school starts for the day. A plastic storage cart, basket or bin will work perfectly for organizing pens, pencils, scissors, paper and more so your child can easily find what is needed as the day plays out. Don’t forget to include water and a few snacks as well! Having everything in place at the start of the day will also prevent distractions caused when running around looking for supplies in the middle of a class.
  3. Post your schedule - Setting up a daily routine for your child will help the workflow of your whole household. Clearly post that schedule in your child’s study area using a white board or piece of copy paper taped to the wall so everyone is aware of the timeline. If possible, ensure that there is also a large clock in the space that your child can read (this might be digital for your small learners). Don’t forget to add in regular break times for snacks and play. If you are working from home, make sure to add in similar times to your own calendar to check in on progress and answer questions. At the end of each day, review the next day’s schedule with your child to ensure that everyone is aware of the needed supplies and timeline.
  4. Practice that sense of humor – This year of virtual learning is new to many of us, families, and school staff alike, and it is almost guaranteed that things will not always go as planned. The internet will fail us, tantrums will happen, and tempers will sometimes flare. When all else fails, don’t forget to laugh with your kids, take a sanity break and regroup together to come up with a solution in a light and forgiving setting. I have said it before, and I will say it again: The sky will not fall if part of a class is missed or an assignment is late. Giving you and your child some grace, followed by taking the necessary steps to get back on track, will ensure a more positive and educational experience for all.

By following these tips and practicing that sense of humor, this year’s virtual schooling process can be a lot less stressful for everyone. A little prep ahead of time will help you to find time to enjoy each day, even if you, like me, can’t wait for Covid-19 to be in our rearview mirrors.
